HAMBURG (Room 110)
HAMBURG (Room 110)
Hamburg, Germany was where The Beatles truly metamorphosed—from raw amateurs into a hard-driving rock ’n’ roll machine, capable of playing for up to eight hours a night. It is impossible to overstate the role Hamburg played in laying the foundations for their future success.
Their first trip was organised by their original manager, Allan Williams, and was followed by four more stints over just two years. What became known as the ‘Mersey Sound’ should really have been called the ‘Hamburg Sound’, according to John Lennon.
The Beatles were instructed to mach schau (put on a show) by club owner Bruno Koschmider, and the boys certainly obliged. Their outrageous banter and the spontaneity of their performances quickly earned them a large and loyal following.
For months at a time, the five lads—John, Paul, George, Pete, and Stu—laboured through the nights and early mornings of Hamburg’s seedy nightclub scene, honing their skills. Before long, those hard-earned talents would be unleashed on an unsuspecting world.
